Welcome to The Book of Esther
by Brian Paul
The
Story of Esther as you’ve never read it before: It combines Biblical
truths
with secular research
Characters and conversations have been added reflecting the author’s
view of
the probable feelings of characters.
The main action is centred in the opulent palace of Xerxes, King of
Persia
486BC – 465BC
Queen Vashti causes outrage by refusing to obey the king when he
commands her
to display her beauty before his party guests. After deposing the queen
Xerxes
makes war with Greece.
The king returns from the war and marries Esther, an unknown Jewish girl
who
replaces Vashti as queen of the mighty Persian Empire. The king loves
Esther
dearly, but there are powerful enemies.
The most formidable foe hates all Jews and tricks the king into issuing a
law
that threatens the life of the queen and the lives of more than
two-million
people living in exile in Persia.
Esther and her cousin Mordecai trust implicitly in God, but even so the
results
don’t come easy.
After
agonising prayer and fasting, they implement a plan. Should they fail,
the
result would mean death: while success would provide for the continuance
of the
Jewish nation.
This compelling story shows how a king’s vast wealth was unable to fully
satisfy – and how a girl’s trust in God and her duty to her stepfather
are
marshalled in a desperate fight against evil
Esther’s story has inspired the annual Jewish festival of The Feast of
Purim:
A pleasure to read: The book follows the Bible story. It’s uncomplicated and gives insight into the politics of the time and the thoughts that Esther could well have had.
The action takes
place around
2500 years ago, but it’s as fresh as today’s newspaper. Almost everyone will find that Esther’s thinking shows a great picture of faith.
